If one is lucky, has a solid grasp of the pros and cons of your chosen technical area, and is a good communicator with government technical people, one can have a long a productive career.

Cons

Because everyone wants good work, and senior staff who are skilled at managing upward, great projects are at risk of being poached by seniors. Since sponsors are necessarily not deep experts in more than one technical area, getting good work stolen is a constant risk.
