Understaffed and no support

Pros

Culture seemed ok in other teams

Cons

- Outdated and inefficient technology, particularly the virtual desktop on company laptops, makes it difficult to work productively from home - Limited onboarding and training support; after a few weeks, team capacity constraints meant less guidance than expected - High expectation to become self-sufficient quickly, with a “sink or swim” environment - Teams appear understaffed, leading to heavy workloads and pressure on existing employees

Pros

There are good people on the teams; employees I worked with were generally kind despite being kept very busy. No bullying culture. As a female developer I never felt discriminated against, and although my team was majority male, I did work with quite a few women total across my team and others. My vacation requests were never rejected, and my leads were very understanding about taking 1 or 2 hours out from the office when necessary for things like dentist appointments.

Cons

Developers receive a lot of night calls for production support. Currently, many systems are poorly documented, and the employees who developed them have left the bank. Communication between teams is very difficult unless you have personal contacts on the team you need. Promotions are not received unless applied for in MUFG's systems along with the yearly review process, and only happen on that timeline. The bank is also no longer friendly to remote work; I was let go along with many others as part of Return to Office initiatives. Other previous pros are being cracked down on as well. Early in my time at MUFG there was little micromanagement, and my work was judged on its results. Now there is increasing pressure to log your work activity every minute of every day in JIRA, which eats up actual working time and promotes a workstyle of "do nothing, say you did everything" in my opinion. There is also politicking going on among management which is resulting in a lot of team reshuffling and other instability. And I am also concerned about the push to introduce AI into as many facets of the bank as possible. The pressure is growing, but as a highly regulated sector, I think the bank should take more caution with AI products.
