Pros

During my 1.5 years working at MLH, I would say that this health system has many tools for bedside nursing available that make doing our jobs on a daily basis much easier to do. Think ergonomics! Work-life balance is huge, most units require their RNs to work every third weekend. However, there is more than enough time in between to handle responsibilities and make time for yourself on your days off. There is also flexible overtime scheduling. When overtime is available, shifts can be anywhere from 4 hours-12 hours, but the option to not work an entire shift is almost always there. After five years as an employee, you will be eligible for a pension (free money for life)! And of course free employee parking, no matter what location you work. Eligible for transfer for new grad RNs after a year or a year and half to another unit or facility of interest! Also, if you were to show an interest in shadowing another unit, this is something that can be discussed with a unit manager and/or nurse educator to do so. Another great incentive is free credentialing and education through healthstream, preparation courses for certifications etc.

Cons

The pay grades for RNs is above market value, however, there is some room for improvement and pay differentials for per diem, part time and night shift workers all increased last month. Main Line has also implementing a weekend program to address this deficit in which RNs who are hired for the positions get paid a considerable amount to address the need during weekend shifts.
