Management doesn't care

Pros

Smart people willing to give their best to serve clients, grantees, and recipients of federal funding. The rank and file employees at this place are competent, kind, and hard-working. A refreshingly ego-free, supportive workplace as far as peer relationships are concerned, and the employee-led initiatives like the MSG Cares team do great work with very little support.

Cons

The management situation is a constant mess. High turnover at the executive level, no professional development to speak of (despite the PD committee's proposals to improve things, which were met with disinterest by management), bare minimum perks, if any. There were frequent expensive hires for new leaders or consultants and a sudden, unannounced initative to use company money to fund a school in Asia--meanwhile, multiple long-tenured staff were given "raises" that barely covered cost of living increases. This is apparently "compassionate capitalism" or some other made-up term that gets repeated by the president a lot. This is a contracting company without even a permanent proposal team. Every proposal is done ad hoc, with employees expected to jump in at a moment's notice with minimal training, adding hours to their schedules on top of ongoing contract work. No "thank you" from above, no recognition, and yet no way to move up in the company unless you're devoted to that line of work. I'd be shocked if the company isn't sold within a couple years, though all you'll ever hear at an all-staff meeting is that the future is brighter than ever. An exhausting, frustrating place to work.

Pros

Flexible schedule (except for those working on BD) Nice colleagues Philanthropic efforts Ability to do and try new things easily

Cons

Significant staff turnover No time or budget for staff development Disorganized business development process Arbitrary and owner-directed promotions and bonuses Gender inequality Low salaries and poor benefits Whole focus is on winning new business while contracts, staff, and budgets go without needed oversight HR works to protect the company, not the employees
