Top Level Leadership Consistently Fails to Create a Good Workplace Environment
Pros
Low expectations means low stress, good benefits, and work is sometimes interesting. MCHHS leadership is improving and wants to care about staff working conditions and opportunities.
Cons
Leadership at the county level cares significantly more about presenting an image to political constituents than they do about creating a working environment where staff can thrive. The policy disallowing remote work with no exceptions and no explanations during the height of the pandemic has created a mass exodus of employees when remote work is becoming standard everywhere else. This was a substantial benefit that became part of worker compensation that was taken away for no reason or explanation, and led to conditions that caused a workplace outbreak. Limited opportunities for advancement and pay is lower than neighboring counties of similar size (all of which allow remote work). Limited training opportunities -- there is very little cohesion or strategic direction, leading to low morale.
