To put it bluntly, DO NOT work for this company. I started here in July 2015 at 19 years old and was fired 3 days before Christmas 2023 due to my FIRST company vehicle accident, which had occurred 10 days prior. **To those who read this, please do not discount me as a disgruntled (ex)employee. Me getting fired just fast tracked my resignation**
With that being said, they’re just another company to add to the list of ruthless corporations who would have your position filled before your funeral. When I first started here, it was an entirely different company than when I was fired. There was leadership, structure, accountability, and decent opportunity to make a livable wage. I can only speak up to the end of 2023, but that is no longer the case. Mastec has little to no opportunity for advancement, as over the past 4 years they’ve done nothing but eliminate managerial positions. With streaming becoming more relevant every day, DirecTV has become less and less relevant annually, and Mastec leaves little to no solutions for its employees to compensate the lost wages. The solutions they do provide such as taking on contracts for other business lines (I.e smartaira, ADT, AAS) pay LESS than the dwindling DirecTV work that it would be replacing on any particular day. They will send you hours away from your home multiple times a week, and expect that time to be free. They force you to clock a lunch break on any day you work more than 5 hours whether or not you have the time to actually take a break. There’s absolutely no structure within the management. My manager worked remotely from 6 hours away; The supervisor doesn’t really care about anything, and nobody takes him seriously when he does try to correct an issue (and when that happens he just gives up and doesn’t follow through). You get shorted on equipment every pick up day, not at fault of the warehouse manager but instead the technology they use to determine how much equipment we’re installing in between pick ups. When you live 1.5 hours away from the warehouse, that becomes more than a minor inconvenience. They make it extremely hard to have a work/life balance, as every day is different. You could be done at 3:00 pm 25 minutes from home, or 7:00 pm 2.5 hours away from home; and you never know until you wake up and see your route in the morning. The turnover rate is absolutely ridiculous, and nowadays techs stay for 90 days @ $20/hour to collect their $1000 bonus, and then they quit. Meanwhile, the guys who do stay around get paid piece rate and could work an 8 hour day to go home with $30. With that being said, there’s TONS more minor inconveniences that I could complain about but I think the point has been made. 8.5 years of sacrificing a ridiculous amount of my youth for a company whose HR rep said “it is what it is” on the PHONE CALL telling me I was fired just confirmed everything I had learned about Mastec in that time. I knew how badly I was being treated at Mastec, but I stuck around to maintain a schedule with my child and because I was scared of change. I now work for a small, family run business and my eyes have been opened to just how badly I was treated. So again, DO NOT put yourself in that vicious cycle with this company, THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.
