Pay and benefits. Majority of people who work there do care about the organization and how it benefits society. Volunteering is important.
Cons
Lots of pretty words about opportunity and learning new skills. Can easily get stuck in a position for years with no opportunity to get out. Sr management politics impacts all employees. Expect annual reorganizations and supervisors - sometimes as many as 3 in a year. Expect annual layoffs - "expense reduction". Can be high stress and long hours. depending on your division (less resources to cover more work). Think of the position as on the job training for your next job with another company.
