Pros

I've worked at APT in Product Development for 2 years now, and absolutely love it. Pros: 1. The company is growing quickly and has a very flat structure. These factors combined mean that you have a ton of opportunity to make an impact from very early on in your career. 2. Career reviews are performed every 6 months and involve an in-depth process of capturing feedback from all peers that you've worked with. The cadence and depth of these reviews make it easy to progress in your career and feel like you have clear opportunities to work on. 3. At its core, APT is a company that trusts its employees. For example, there's no time tracking to make sure that you've captured 40 hours, no one has to "approve" your vacations, etc. This could work pretty poorly at larger companies, but at APT there is an atmosphere where people are accountable and responsible even without "management" looking over their shoulders. 4. There are plenty of perks (like snacks around the office, fun team events, and weekly catered lunches) - perks obviously aren't the most important part of working somewhere, but they do make it more fun. 5. I work in the Arlington office and love the location - Arlington has a great "city feel" (there are tons of fun restaurants and shopping in the area, and you're also just miles away from DC and everything it has to offer). At the same time, because Arlington isn't as populated/popular as cities like DC, NYC, or SF, everything is more affordable and it's easier to find fun hiking trails and such.

Cons

Some cons to note: 1. Because APT has grown so quickly in the past couple of years, there are some "growing pains" (for example, some departments are pretty bottom-heavy). This can create pain points, but it also means that there are a ton of opportunities to step up and take ownership from the start.

Pros

Culture and people. APT has a unique war room structure where you sit in a pod of ~seven teammates during the day. It fosters an environment of discussion, knowledge-sharing, and humor…it’s not a place where people stare silently into their monitors. The people are a blast to be around…intelligent, driven, but not too serious. Everyone is super friendly and helpful; it never feels cutthroat. Ballston, while pricey, is a cool, unique neighborhood. It’s extremely walkable, so most people get by without a car. Most of the engineers live in the area, and the proximity makes it easy to hang out on weekends and make friends in this new city. Worklife balance is mostly great. I average about 46 hours per week. I’ve only had 3 weeks in 2 years that went above 50 hours. The problems we solve are interesting, especially for a business-to-business company. On-boarding is effective; you’ll have a great idea of what you’re doing and the impact it’s making almost immediately. Senior management are competent and approachable. APT genuinely cares about everyone’s development and wants everyone to be in a place where they’ll actually enjoy what they’re doing. And they give everyone an individual advisor to make sure this happens. Team events are high quality and high quantity. Compensation is high – the signing bonus is unparalleled, and most people get 5-10% raises every six months.

Cons

While the worklife balance is good, you do have to fight to keep it that way. There’s always a lot to do and you often feel like you either need to stay late or just leave a mountain of unfinished tasks on your desk. The talented coworkers are a double-edged sword: it’s easy to bring your A game and still feel average Washington DC is a transient city and lots of people you meet will move away within 2 years. While tight deadlines are very rare, they are miserable when they do happen.

Pros

- Compensation and Benefits overall - Paid volunteer days, charitable donation matching, great base pay and attainable bonuses. - Flexible work - I can work from anywhere - tremendous room to move around the company and grow and try new things - typically great camaraderie amongst people.

Cons

- Organizational structure and frequent changes (I had 5 bosses in 2.5 years between attrition and reorg) - Reorgs happen seemingly without thinking through the new role structures or responsibilities - Highly matrixed - often seems like there are people in 4 diff departments doing the same job - Some people have become lazy/complacent and leave a great divide in work productivity - often large scale initiatives will get halfway (or more) through and then get scrapped.
