Great company. Patience requires. Upward mobility possible. But they will blow smoke and BS if you let them.
Pros
Great team/family culture and atmosphere. If you are dedicated, you can be successful with McCarthy. If you come in through the field, you will have to put your time in. But it's all worth it once you become staff and get those amazing bennies.
Cons
Some cons... There are quite a few assistant supes, with varying levels of experience and knowledge, and they aren't always utilized in the best way. A lot of younger guys who want to do the best job they can (and a lot of the guys are amazing at their jobs) but some just have no business doing what they're doing. They come from pre con or they were engineers before now... It's a recipe for some head butting between Foreman and the guys in the field and those Assistant Supes. Also, when it comes to moving forward with your own career, you have to constantly fight and battle just to get the staff to do what they say they're going to do. Everyone is worried about their own career and not yours. Except for a select few that will actually mentor you and try to do right by you. I recommend anyone trying to move up with McCarthy to constantly ask your superintendents what you can be doing to further your career and how to go about that. You have to actually ask for your own performance reviews (in my experience). Ask to go through any training they offer and to attend any classes or events that you are able to. Ask to complete every certification you possibly can. Find out from some higher ups if there is any outside resources or classes that would help your career in this field with this company. Odds are if you are showing that kind of interest and dedication then you will catch the attention of some of the right people that can help you and guide you to get to where you want to be.
