Pros

Some flexibility in schedule. Decent benefits. Above average digital products.

Cons

Where do I begin? This was the worst experience of my career. The company has no infrastructure. Management is reactive, not proactive. Decision makers are completely out of touch with the majority of the markets they serve. Most of the upper-level managers are in their position because they know someone or were good at some other lower level position they previously held. Internal communication is virtually non-existent. Training is hit and miss. There's no real plan to anything they institute. Most operational decisions are made willy-nilly. The philosophy seems to be "let's try this and see if it works", as opposed to any real strategic planning. Then when those willy nilly plans fail, the blame is placed on the workers who had no input in the "planning" and no explanation or training regarding what was expected..

Pros

Freedom to execute goals on your own terms. Management is not overbearing. You'll have the freedom to get the job done as you see fit

Cons

Not a lot of structure or direction. Overall though we know our job we just need to get it done. Also when conflicts arise we don't have much power to change operating procedures.

Pros

If you're just starting out as a journalist, you will learn A LOT working for this company because you will be forced to do a dozen different jobs.

Cons

So many cons... Leadership is largely incompetent and ineffective. They've got a "let's throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" attitude toward looking for new digital platforms and what will be sustainable, profitable and effective moving forward instead of coming up with a sound game plan. Not to mention you'll probably be working about 60 hours a week just to keep your head above water (and then get yelled at if you claim more than 40 hours each week on your time sheet) for very lousy pay. No one's seen a raise in years from what I've heard from the vets. I don't make enough to move out of my parents' house with my student debt, and I'm now three years out of college. Plus they keep cutting staff and expect the people left to put out the same amount of print and digital product. The problem is they have no clue what they're doing and can't make their digital platforms profitable, so they're still dependent on "legacy" revenue (i.e. print), but as that slowly decreases the company slowly dies, so they squeeze more profit out by cutting staff and resources and demanding the same output. I honestly think they're just seeing how much money they can make off it before it finally crashes and burns at this point. Bottom line: stay away. It's a horrible environment to work in and I honestly don't see this company surviving another five or 10 years...
