Great co-workers, terrible management

Pros

Co-workers are often fun, helpful and engaging. Work from home

Cons

Lackluster pay, even for the area. No real opportunities for advancements or promotions. Management consists of the same people just trading titles back and forth. One week someone is a manager, but it turns out they don't know what they're doing, so next week they're a director of something else. No one actually has any qualifications, it's just rearranging deck chairs. Imagine "reporting" to someone who isn't even qualified to have your current job.

Good work, great people, poor pay

Pros

Great place to learn. Job security. Positive culture with regards to helping new hires and answering questions. Work-from-home and remote working are built-in to the company. Aggressively hiring.

Cons

The pay is towards the bottom of the range for many developer positions. Sizable profits and growth don't seem to impact worker pay. There are bonuses and commission, but they do not offset the low pay.

Permanent startup mentality

Pros

Not a lot of oversight, no one checks your work, even the people who ask for something to be done asap can't be bothered to provide any feedback. Work from home

Cons

High employee turnover and work is not re-distributed accordingly, meaning everyone is doing the work of 5 people and getting the salary of maybe 1. CEO has no respect for anyone's time. Persistently late or more often absent from meetings they schedule.

Pros

The people are great. It's a small company where everyone can feel valued. It's easy to take on additional responsibility. There is a lot of flexibility that allows for work/life balance.

Cons

It's difficult to remove a hat after putting it on. Workload fluctuates a lot, and is often less than engaging.

Pros

MIE has a small business culture where people on your team, or even cross teams, will help answer your questions or jump on a call to help you with issues that come up. Coming from a consulting background, this is rare to see on this scale. Great managers as well. Ability to manage your own time and work remote.

Cons

It's possible to grow within the company by applying to other positions, but there are no built-in career advancement as you build your product knowledge and grow.

Instability from restructuring

Pros

Work from home first culture.

Cons

Private Equity firm brought on a couple of years ago. Few changes at first, but now they are starting to restructure. Lots of new people brought in to seemingly position for sale. Departments and people are disappearing with no communication. The company has changed a lot.
