Pros
It's almost impossible to get fired, at least from the store I worked at. Job security seems to be very good. The only times I saw someone fired, it was for things that were way over the top in the company's eyes - coming in very drunk and trying to drive the forklift, climbing into the trash compactor while it's on, repeated theft of valuable items, etc.
Cons
The base pay rate is lower than Wal-Mart. That's really low. Based on all the other cons, I would say if you're willing to put up with them, go apply at Wal-Mart and at least get a better wage. The wage is livable for me since I started six years ago and am capped out. The managers have a very bad habit of interrupting when you raise a question or concern, and with a single exception, every manager at my store has been nothing but dismissive of even serious concerns, all the way up to theft of personal property, continual harrassment (talking about another low-level employee shouting and making threats at me for two years), retaliation for reporting violation of policy... even theft of low-value company property has been overlooked, not even investigated. The Silent Whistle system is a joke, nothing ever gets dealt with. As a side effect of this, even poor work ethic is overlooked. I suppose it's nice in a way, since if you're done with all your work for the day, you can screw off for an hour until you get to go home and no one will care. That helps reduce the stress of having to work with a sociopath. Cross-training is also very poor; stability in a job is good, but it also helps when an employee knows how several positions related to their own work. I've worked almost every position in the store over the past six years, except Deli, Service (thank god), and Electronics. I've seen a lot of the typical handoff crap where one person doesn't know how doing his job sloppily will affect the next person in the food chain, and this would be solved if they just once in a while had someone from one department cover a related department during some downtime. The recall system is the worst offender, one of those things every manager just hands down to me, the guy who became an expert in doing recalls as a result of being handed them so many times.
