Pros

The only pro I can think of is that Meijer is a good place to be trained for cake decorating. They will hire you with no experience and train you. It's a good place to get an idea of basic decorating so you can eventually move on to something better rather than paying for classes or schooling. They are also very strict about making sure you get all of your breaks and lunches, you can be written up for not taking enough breaks.

Cons

The cons are that there isn't very much room for creativity. Meijer is very strict about the cakes that can be displayed or made for special orders. There is never enough hours given to the decorators to be able to keep display cases full at all times and I feel that management purposely short staffs the employees to get them to work faster. The store directors don't really seem to care why the cake cases are empty, and they don't take the time to figure out what the problems really are they just tell you to fill them up. It's a never ending problem that I grew tired of very quickly.

Work here only if you really, badly, need a job.

Pros

Co-workers very friendly, so are most of the higher-ups. If you show you can do your job correctly, Mgt. leaves you alone and lets you work. Health care coverage is available (although not cheap).. As long as you wear the required uniform, they allow employees vast leeway in 'personalizing' themselves, such as wild hair color/hair style/nail color. Direct deposit of payroll. Very willing to accommodate requests for time off and scheduling.

Cons

Being force to work in other depts. on a daily basis because they are 'short-handed' there---but that is only because it's under-scheduled, saving the company money. Scheduling can be crazy. You might work until 11 PM Monday, be back to work the next day at 8 AM, then be off for 5 days (not requested off). Often told at the last minute that you are being 'held over', sometimes for hours. Waiting for hours before being allowed to go on break or lunch. I have worked entire shifts without getting lunch break. You must ask permission to go on break/lunch. You must ask permission to leave at the end of your shift. Can't contact your manager? Too bad, you can't go. Employee breakroom is disgusting, garbage bins overflowing onto floor every day. Drinking fountain is filthy, it has been cleaned once in the past yr. Correcting employee safety issues can take months, if it gets done at all. Management will not protect you from upset customers. Customer is always right. Even when they are screaming in your face. Even when they are cursing you. Even when they call you nasty names. Even when they actually strike you. They...are...always...right.
