Pros

You will meet many friends at meijer, both co-workers and team leaders if you are lucky. If you aren't completely incompetent it can be steady work.

Cons

You will never advance in the company, EVER, many people at my store have been there for well over a decade and are still part-time, and will always be. These people are good employee's, they understand their job, and are loyal, yet their years of service are completely ignored. All service department supervisors at my store are part time, you cannot make a career out of working at Meijer. There is no motivation to do any more than the bare minimum, you will never get promoted, never get full time, never get any sort of recognition for going above and beyond. My advice for those who work there would by to look at it as a temporary job after highschool and before graduating from college, and to not put any real effort into your work, because as stated before it won't make a difference. Management always stresses the importance of customer service, yet never provides the means for employees to provide it, i.e. adaquate staff. We are constantly short staffed and this has been a reoccuring theme in my 10+ years there. Store management is only allowed a certain amount of hours for labor per corporate, which is rarely adaquate for the buisness we generate. More often than not you will see team members from various other departments (whom are already short staffed) filling in for the critically short staffed cashier area. As a result customers can not find assistance in any departments, then have to wait in long lines at the check out lanes, are provided with less than ideal service by someone from another department running the check out lane, and god forbid there is a price discrepancy they have to wait even longer in line at the service desk because 90% of the time one or more of the service desk clerks are running a check out lane. They are also in the beggining stages of eliminating any benefits for part timers. When any employee averages over 24 hours a week they are offered health care and vacation/personal days. Due to the affordable health care law which mandates all employees getting atleast 30 hrs per week receive benefeits, Meijer is capping part timers to 24 hrs or below so they can stop offering those benefits to most employee's. Of course when one considers the fact that in the past they have always offered those same benefits to workers receiving less then the 30 hrs the law mandates it becomes apparent this is another way they are screwing over their employees to save a buck. It would be easy to understand wanting to save a buck if times were tough, yet Meijer inc. has been gloating about their near record profits for the past 3 or 4 years.

Pros

- They are fairly flexible with scheduling. - Personalities that exhibit flattering and slimy tendencies will excel here. - It's a good 'low point' to start from in order to motivate you to find a better job.

Cons

- ALL the managers are sneaky, inconsistent, and generally unqualified to be part of an effective management team. - Team members who put on a facade and are utterly submissive to management whim are quickly promoted; whether or not more qualified persons were in line for the promotion. - Management and team leaders alike play an excellent game of pass-the-buck. No one takes responsibility for their actions or their team. Instead, they place blame on the easiest targets: the team members. - Team members who work hard and try to represent the company well will be abused by the service coordinators, while those who can weasel their way out of an entire day's work are adored by management. - When problems arise, promises are made by management, but never kept. - When good workers leave because of the abuses suffered, they are asked to 'go on leave' and not actually quit, so that the already horrendous turnover-rate will not become worse. - The pay is horrible for what you are asked to do. Check out customers, bag their groceries for them, deal with complaints because the management doesn't want to, and clean up other people's screw-ups for $7.25? No thanks. - No concern for the safety of guests or employees. When a tornado was in the very near vicinity of the store, management refused to warn their customers and forced the cart pushers to go back outside in the dangerous conditions. - You only get 12 disciplinary points. They add up quick and management will hold them over your head. - A 8 hour shift, according to Union, is supposed to receive lunch and two 15 minute breaks. A lot of people don't get to see that last break. - When you tell team members at other Meijer stores which store you work at, the sympathetic looks they give you leaves you completely embarrassed. - This store is the BLACK HOLE of all Meijer stores. Sexual harassment, corporate theft, managerial bullying, and general bad business practices are allowed to continue because corporate repeatedly turns a blind eye. These issues have been constantly reported and continually ignored.

Pros

You can ask off and pretty much get what days you want. They are very good about working around your schedule especially if you are in school.

Cons

The upper management is very corrupt and not very organized. Many of the service coordinators are very unhelpful and unprofessional. There is no way for a complaint to looked at seriously. Even if the complaint was about something such as other employees treating others as lower individuals. There really isn't a way to get raises even if you are very experienced at what you do. The 10 cent raise every 1000 hours isn't good enough to help support an individual.
