Fast-paced, tons of quality work, innovative

Pros

High quality of work. Challenging projects that support national defense and protect the U.S. warfighter. Senior management has a vision and regularly articulates it to employees. Most employees are decent, dedicated and hardworking. New Andover HQ is a major improvement over the tired Chelmsford facility. Recent acquisitions are opening up new opportunities for people to grow their skills and experience.

Cons

Workload - Poor work life balance; the workload is high and ever expanding. Partially offsetting this are quality work and teams of dedicated people. HR function - challenging, abrupt personalities in HQ HR function. Difficult to obtain HR support and the HR team doesn't understand Mercury's defense business model and the subtleties of that model; HR acts as if we are a tech company serving commercial clients. Business systems - substantial changes to our business systems within the past year. Some of the systems work well (Skype for business, expense reporting, project planning), some work OK (Solium Shareworks), and some were launched with limited or broken functionality (time tracking, vacation requests). You can now submit expense reports from your phone (finally eliminated paper expense reports this year) but not report time on projects or request time off on a mobile device. IT support - takes a week to obtain routine IT support if you don't mark your request as business critical. IT rolls out major new systems like Skype for business and virtual meeting technology in conference rooms without providing training on how to utilize it. Comp - whether you are a top performer or on track you receive the same 2.5-3% comp increase each year (used to be each 18 months). Mercury calls it a merit increase but it is barely a cost of living adjustment. Recent job architecture project resulted in many odd/ headscratching job titles.

So far so good.

Pros

So far it's been a very good place to work. The working schedule is very flexible. The benefits are great compared to other companies in the area. They recently moved to a new building in Andover and it's more of an open concept working environment. It's really good at promoting collaboration and general conversation with your coworkers. Standing/ sitting adjustable desks are great! The company really seems to care about their employee base. I am new here, but I already feel like I am happier than any of my other jobs at which I've been. I have no opinion of senior management so far.

Cons

The "open concept"esque of the building is double edged. It's nice to collaborate and interact with your colleagues but it also means no privacy, and it can get loud sometimes if you are around a group of people chatting right next to you. IT is rolling out a new system for the computers and such and so there are bugs there. But they are fairly quick to fix things. The company is very very flexible with time and working hours but there is no official policy on comp/ flex time or working 4x10s or taking every other Friday off. It seems like something you work out with your manager on a case by case basis. The only reason i give compensation and benefits a 4 star is because of this and the fact that I think most US company's compensations could be better. But compared to other US companies, the benefits are very good.

Thank you for this very thoughtful review. We look for input regardless of your experience or tenure with the company so we really appreciate everything you had to say. HR is embarking on an effort to enhance onboarding and will be creating an interdisciplinary team made up of employees across the business to develop it. Our job architecture includes a career path component and we are working with managers to encourage them to make sure their employees and new hires see their future opportunities. We wish you much success at Mercury!

Challenging place to work

Pros

Mercury Systems has great work culture and we are very serious about it. We openly and effectively drive teamwork, execution and commitment. I'm unaware of any employee at my level that doesn't share those values. I feel comfortable calling other sites to talk to subject matter specialist, many of whom I've never met in person and in return offering my help and direction when asked. Upper management is extremely approachable and engaged. I know that they recognize how important our defense products are to the people who go in harms way. The work environment is often challenging technically and in pace, but the rewards are real. We are serious about providing a clean, current, supportive work space and the appropriate tools are always provided. Additionally Mercury keeps giving me stuff...training as needed, bonuses, barbecues, lunches, easy ways to reward co-workers for ideas or help to me personally or the organization in general. Finally I recognize that Mercury is absolutely fearless about change. If management thinks there is a better way to do something institutionally it will be discussed, torn apart, tested and if it still has life someone will pull the trigger.

Cons

Regardless of what I said about change at the executive level there is certainly institutional "inertia" to deal with at the operational levels. Its understandable but often disconcerting. There are too many meetings for my taste and the meetings we need sometimes head off into tangents.
