Pros

South Jordan location: great affordable clinic on site, good and well maintained facility and infrastructure, company is growing and there are lots of opportunities, largest R&D facility at Merit, good & committed employees, CEO certainly values employees and has an ambitious vision for the company. Regulatory Department: Management is helpful and supportive. Talented colleagues who are helpful, collaborative and fun to work with. Opportunity to work on a wide variety of medical devices.

Cons

South Jordan location: no cost of living adjustments or annual increments, 401k leaves something to be desired, high deductible health insurance can be burdensome on employee/families with chronic health conditions, limited healthcare plan options. Regulatory Department: Some middle managers struggle with decision making, problem solving, and providing direction to employees (this leads to employees relying a lot more on the VP to address day to day issues) . Lack of formal bonus structure.

Merit Regulatory Affairs Department

Pros

The Merit Regulatory Affairs group is a great place to be in Merit. Competitive salaries in the industry and area. Potential for annual bonus, depending on company performance. Management is reasonable, open, and approachable on any subject. Work/life balance is very important and supported by management in daily practice, not just in word. Specialists have a say in strategy and work with many stakeholders throughout the company. Responsibilities for submissions and high-profile projects are evenly distributed throughout the group. Hard work and quality input is rewarded. Specialist career advancement and progression opportunities is a consistent topic in management discussions. On a general level, Merit has a small-company feel and is generally very open and friendly among the office staff. Fred works very hard to protect the company and employees. There is stability and job security in the professional staff.

Cons

Corporate level benefits package is on the low end within the industry for this size company (almost 5,000 employees and $700+ million annual revenue). High deductible health plan; less than 50% match on the 401(k); tracking of sick hours for salaried employees; have to accrue vacation hours before they can be used; no formal bonus structure based on objective measures, bonuses are given at the discretion of executive management. Within the Regulatory Affairs department, it seems as if management has been slow to identify and acknowledge when various positions are not performing commensurate with their title. This causes the group to sometimes feel like the few are carrying the load of the many.
