Horrible Company

Pros

The employees are very nice and hard working.

Cons

Benefits are mediocre. CEO is one of the worst in my experience. Employees work hard, the company tells you they had a banner year and pays the same or less bonus as the prior year. This may be one of those companies where the CEO takes all of the money and does not reward the employees fairly for their concerted efforts to make him wealthy. Raises are hard to come by so whatever you receive when you start is likely what you will have for many years to come. You may receive an annual review with the highest scores but this in no manner reflects what you will receive as a bonus or raise. I have never worked in a Company where the average employee spends most of their day complaining about the company, very poor morale. Management is actually asked to write "good" reviews here on GD to counter the bad almost as if this is expected as part of your job. Also first job where I have seen both men and women physically crying at work due to the mental strain of their employment in the Company. HR reports to the head of legal who is also the owner's wife. They control and monitor everything in the company. Management has ZERO signing authority. By zero I mean none. Everything must be approved by the CEO. Need a new piece of equipment that is critical to doing your job, you wait sometimes for months and never get approved to purchase a replacement for the equipment that is not functioning as expected even if the quality group is telling you to improve your process. This company is unique in that you actually have to beg to get the equipment you need to do your job. The R&D facilities are some of the worst I have ever seen, like a poor high school lab that is 40 years old. Would never recommend this company to anyone.

Pros

- When I started the people were fantastic. High quality education and experience as well as an overall social and lively work culture - this may come back but COVID drastically change the environment - Work was simple and manageable - Good place to supplement basic biotech industrial job skills in terms of project management - Flexibility in schedule with WFH capabilities - Certain executives and upper management truly have a passion for the science, which is refreshing to see

Cons

- The positive reviews are fake in terms of advancements - you are constantly denied promotions due to bureaucratic “HR” reasons, which is asinine in itself because the differences in job descriptions are incredibly minuscule and intentionally vague as to continue to deny promotions on the basis of arbitrary judgement of upper management. They will purposely delay reviews throughout the year as a reason why people cannot be promoted or get reasonable raises (in may: well technically we promoted you six months before the review (the reviews are due in January) - this happened to me twice working there) There have been numerous amazing talents that have left solely because they were not given the promotions they deserved or had been promised. - Positive reviews are fake on department transfers, especially if you work for assay services! They will never ever let you go, you’d have to quit first. Across the board it is notoriously difficult to switch teams let alone entire departments; I did both and each time it took an exorbitant amount of time and red tape - and I was lucky. It is entirely up to the managers and depending on how much help they need, they will absolutely deny your request. - The majority of the remaining upper management is completely out of touch with the labs. There is a complete disconnect that had started to fester before COVID but really seeped into the foundation during this time. When MSD moved their AD/AS workers to shift work including weekends that signaled the end for me - they claimed it was for safety reasons but nobody enforced that. Instead, what it enabled was a mass hiring to supplement both the severe turnover of disgruntled employees and the sample testing that they had found very lucrative during the quarantine. This hiring was not vetted as thoroughly as in the past, and the entire process of hiring to training was rushed and mismanaged. So now what you have is an army of fresh undergrads with minimal training. This is classic assembly line technique I’ve seen elsewhere in biotech and it’s a shady practice

Pros

Lot of smart, talented people there. The worst of the "leaders" in R&D and marketing recently left.

Cons

Management there is a cancer. There is more secret backstabbing than any company I have worked there. Totally toxic culture. Several years ago I witnessed HR asking managers to leave positive reviews on Glassdoor. Not sure if they are still doing that. The company hires mostly young foreigners because they can take advantage of them and pay them less. It is basically a sweatshop, with no regards for employees or work/life balance. Management will brutally put down their employees in front of others, some breaking down in tears. Managers are told by their managers to keep performance reviews down so that people cannot advance and are held in their spot. The company abused their best managers and they left. Do not even think of working here.
