You can't fit a square peg in a round hole

Pros

Great people to work with other than the outsourcing departments to different non-English countries. Flexible work environment with increasingly better technology. Reputation within the industry.

Cons

MetLife try's to make a multi-faceted company fit into a narrow rabbit hole. They rest on the laurels of the MetLife brand and pay well below average, and the once generous bonuses are now gone. The corporate management is a political bull ring.

Good company; Lots of change

Pros

Excellent pay. Good benefits, retirement and 401k match. Great company for work/life balance - flexible hours, work remotely - many departments wiling/able to accommodate individual needs. Good working environment. Overhauling most of the office buildings to create a more inviting, energetic and dynamic workplace and attract new talent. Striving to change from stereotypical "stodgy old" insurance company to a more modern financial services company.

Cons

There has been tremendous upheaval in the past year due to changes in business strategy and separation of the retail business. As a result, morale is low. Career advancement can sometimes be difficult because much of it comes down to departmental politics. Since going public in 2000, MetLife's atmosphere has slowly evolved from altruistic and family-focused to more impersonal, bottom line/shareholder-focused (as an enterprise overall - not within departments.)

Pros

The people you work with are the best, they are always willing to help you. Flexible hours, good work life balance for the most part, great if you are a diversity candidate. Benefits are decent.

Cons

Focus is not on its people. Company use to be a culture about its people. You would always hear from the CEO, with the current CEO you rarely hear from him and he is not people oriented. Company has let go too many people with knowledge of the business and rely on outsiders who know nothing about Insurance. With cutbacks, people are asked to do more with less and it's getting very old. Bonuses being cut and salaries are not great. Always changing direction within the company.
