External PR fires are just a manifestation of corporate culture
Pros
no work stress at all, look at how many new products facebook released over the last 5 years
Cons
User Empathy: it is shocking that many orgs dont have any metrics to how much they impact users and what is more shocking is that they dont want to. users come as a secondary class citizen in facebook not a primary asset. i struggled to drive from user side. big thinking: the company really discourages big thinking, they even write this in performance reviews. innovation is handicapped by the culture values. opportunities and risks: it is very easy to predict next steps within facebook whether it is an opportunity or a risk but senior leadership for some reason dont act on 90+% prediction accuracy. leaders should prevent risks from turning into massive issues and pursue obvious opportunities, but facebook wait till last minute and activate fire fighting, also too many missed opportunities. Fire Fighting: we are constantly in a reactive mode of firefighting, it blinds us from seeing what needs to be done. Planning: facebook is super allergic to "planning" as it is perceived to be a top down approach. we see multiple solutions to the same problem withing the same team as a symptom. Slow Culture: within facebook every individual is super fast as there is freedom to what you want/can do, but it slows the entire machine pretty dramatically as there is no direction and we end up correcting course every month. Decision Making: there is no process or methods on how to move the needle, it is all based on one's social likability. HR culture: HR is part of so many aspects in facebook more than any other american corporate. they created this toxic environment to be a single point of failure in most decision. Bottom up approach: make people really dizzy as there is a lack of direction. unless you are an engineer, you will suffer badly. I am really super surprised that PR fires are not 10 more folds of what we have today.
