Pros

-Friendly management and staff -Always up-to-date on new consumer electronics -Decent employee discount -Good healthcare benefits Micro Center was a really good place to open your mind about the world of consumer electronics. I enjoyed the laid-back approach to work, the camaraderie that the employees tended to have, as well as the ability of certain managers to sympathize with the underlings.

Cons

Having worked in General Sales for the bulk of my career here, I have a lot to say about it. -The pay is abysmal if you work in General Sales. I wish I was exaggerating. Having worked there, I can suggest that GS associates need to be paid hourly, with incentives to sell things like service plans and such, instead of being strictly commissioned with a $4/hr base rate. The workers there were literally competing for the sales of low-price items, like $2.99 audio adapters, while every other sales department (Systems, Apple, and Build-Your-Own) sold thousands of dollars of merchandise regularly. -General Sales associates are also tasked with unloading the merchandise truck and stocking the shelves, all while being paid the same $4 an hour while being expected to sell. In addition to being the main merchandisers, they are expected to clean the shelves, dust, sweep, and vacuum, in addition to selling. As much as Micro Center loves to claim the moral high ground against Fry's Electronics for being a more ethical workplace, at least Fry's assigns its salespeople to earn hourly pay for doing manual-labor in place of selling on given days of the week. The environment of Micro Center is good, but the actual logistics of selling and handling customer's requests needs to be reworked. Salespeople are effectively punished on days that there is low traffic. Managers tend to play favorites with the staff, but this is natural of any workplace.

Thank you for the feedback - we are looking into how best to structure our General Sales area. As you know from having worked with us for over 3 years, we are testing several options. We hope you'll consider returning to us if your situation changes. Thanks, Angie Miller VP-HR

Pros

If you love computers it's nice to be around like minded people. Management very lax and understanding. Hours extremely flexible if part time.

Cons

All positions are graded heavily. Shifts are either ok with morning shift, or your whole day is gone because of the second shift.

Pros

knowledgeable sales people. way better than Fry's stable workforce, way better than Fry's investment in training free classes and tech support for customers good location in Mercado Center on 101 competitive prices with Fry's, Best Buy, etc. Would give 5 stars for the business model. Would give 5 stars for the regional manager that came in to help occasionally. Yelp reviews reflect the occasional bad experience but a generally loyal customer base

Cons

Tough to compete with so many Fry's stores in the area Advertised by mailers and not tv or radio Therefore low visibility. So many people had never heard of MicroCenter Often ran out of inventory of advertised specials, disappointing customers Vicious cycle of low visibility, low demand, limited supply, disappointed customers Expensive lease at Mercado Center that they were unable to renegotiate. Low sales + expensive lease = poorest performing store in the chain. Some managers were good, but some managers were very bad. No news there. But when your model is investing in your sales staff, bad managers driving away good people was disastrous. And because MicroCenter is a small chain, spread out around the country, the company found it impossible to get good managers from other locations to come in and make improvements at the poorest performing store in the chain. Would give 1 star for some of the managers. Would give 1 star for the inventory management from home office that disappointed customers for so many years.

We are interested in learning more about your post and the timing as it's been several years since we had the location in Santa Clara. Please call me at 614-850-3150 to talk further about any recent developments that we should be aware of. Sincerely, Angie Miller VP-HR
