Pros

Technically challenging work in may parts of the company. Strong focus on design and product quality. Reasonably good pay for the area. Many long-term employees who feel comfortable with the culture.

Cons

The company has been successful at making commodity components, but lacks the ability to innovate across the organization. The culture revolves around a production mentality equating contribution to the number of hours spent at the job. Time at work is tracked for all employees including senior management. This is often at the expense of actually performing any work. Management in general does not see any need to improve believing the company is doing just fine.

Pros

Hard to think of any

Cons

They really have no clue how to manage a toolset. I have never seen a place that a PM takes 5 days to be put back up to production. I once saw a tool struggle with SPC charts for six weeks before engineering finally called a task force. They do not give yearly raises. You must be in your position for a period of time before you get a promotion and money. Ex. senior technician must be in position for three years before seeing a promo and increase in pay.

Pros

-It's a paycheck. -Fairly decent benefits, especially when companies are cutting back on even offering health insurance -Fairly generous starting salaries just for having an engineering degree. Doesn't matter if you're willing to actually understand how the stuff is made.

Cons

-So many capable, ambitious and intelligent people left because the loudest liars in the room are clamoring to steal credit or dodge accountability. -Pervasive dog-eat-dog mentality, and a deeply-ingrained cronyism culture. Don't expect to rise through the ranks unless you're buddy-buddy with part of the Boise fraternity, and willing to humiliate co-workers in the most brazen ways as "professionally" possible. Perhaps those people know how easily their jobs can be automated... -Data quality, validity, and significance is irrelevant as long as you have a pretty Powerpoint presentation. -Unless you have some knowledge to bring to the table that this company doesn't want a competitor to have, don't expect to be recognized on technical know-how. -Quality of work is measured by how long you're in the building, and how many emails you "Reply All" to. (badge readers at each exit track time on site down to the second). -Upper management is a revolving door of transplants from Boise who have no qualms about regularly throwing massive amounts of subordinates under the bus.
