Important Considerations for Non-Attorneys

Pros

If you are simply looking for stable employment, this is a fine place to work. However, this is not the place for a fulfilling career unless you hold a JD.

Cons

While there are some wonderful partners, there generally seems to be a culture where associates aren’t expected to be respectful towards non-lawyer colleagues. In fact, there was a complete void of culture, professional development, upward mobility, and respect for admin staff in my experience. I felt an implication that I should just feel lucky to be there without any of those things. While this firm loves to make splashy headlines about raising associate pay, it does not have a team mentality when it comes to recognizing accomplishments – nor does it appear to be interested in being a competitive place for non-attorney talent. Having had far better experiences at comparable BigLaw firms, I’d encourage candidates to be vigilant throughout the interview process and explore all available options before settling.

Pros

Nice office views, good cafeteria

Cons

Numerous: sadistic, bullying lawyers who yell and embarrass junior lawyers and LAs; the management play head games by creating arbitary rules (like "ultilization rates") that are impossible to follow; partners force you to do things like hold doors open for them; no organization of files or documents that create total chaos and wasted time and effort; lots of favoritism and #MeToo issues.

Pros

Lots of opportunity for overtime, cafeteria in house, training for new legal assistants, train comes directly into the building.

Cons

Atmosphere is very strained. There is a clear separation between staff and attorneys. You're made to feel like the partners and senior associates are gods even though Milbank is average top law firm that attracts mediocre law schools. I went on to work at a higher ranked firm and that kind of tense atmosphere is certainly not the case here and would be deemed unacceptable. Paralegals are treated like machines and work egregious hours under unnecessary amounts of stress. The supervisors are on the side of attorneys and will throw you to the wind if they feel like you can mentally take it. The work is also spread out unevenly among departments and paralegals. I worked very hard and had a series of terrible experiences causing me to be at work for 23 hours without any assistance and while being berated by the attorneys I worked with. My managers were completely unaware of the chaos ensuing and did not care. This was the worst career move I ever made.
