Good place to attend college, not a great place to work

Pros

Benefits are the biggest pros. You get more than a week off for Christmas holidays, you get off at 4 during summer, some flexibility in hours, polite students, some passionate faculty, good programs

Cons

In my experience, men and women were treated differently by both male and female supervisors. Women are more likely to be asked to perform administrative duties than men. Performance expectations are also higher for women than men. Poor communication among departments. Administrators who are out of touch with employees, are sometimes disrespectful of those employees, and, generally, undervalue the time and work of their employees. Below-average pay. Workers hadn't received a raise in many years until the year I started, and by then it was a minimal raise each year after that despite profits of nearly half a million last year. Deans and other administrators are arrogant and seek to punish anyone they feel disrespects them, and that can include honest criticism of a working relationship. I often felt I was being disciplined or ignored after speaking out about things I thought were unfair work practices. I felt expectations were different for various employees if supervisors favored them more. I was asked to take on the job functions of an employee who quit without compensation or even basic gratitude from supervisor. Don't expect much training or career development. I never once was sent to a conference to learn more to help my department, but people at higher levels often take international trips and attend conferences without sharing what they learned to the people who do the bulk of the work that isn't just managerial fluff.
