Pros

Mizuho has some large ambitions of becoming the premier stop for Investment Banking when working in the Asian Market. Investing quite heavily in cloud technology and virtualization to drive in that direction. Health Benefits are about half the out of pocket costs compared to Domestic Firms, while remaining as comprehensive.

Cons

Stuffy management who resistant to change and stifling the ability of the firm to move towards its goal directions. Work from home policy following the pandemic restriction relaxation is a mess of differing policies depending upon department and manager. 401k match is an abysmal 2% Raise average 3% while inflation is near 8%, providing pay cuts to employees and demanding more expenses. Manual excel processes are hard to change. Firm lacks a proper data governance program, and instead ops for lite Data Management Office for a check in the box type design that is failing every department that should be able to rely on it. Back office lacks skills and personnel to support firms growth goals and likely to collapse. Manual processes pose systemic risk to the firms ability to grow and current staff involved in those processes are overworked and likely to leave.

Pros

If you're not in one of the groups that works the most, you have a great work life balance and good pay (for the work you do). You can literally practice interviewing all day while doing no work and get a decent exit opp if you're in the consumer team for example. The groups that work the most are financial sponsors, TMT and maybe IDI.

Cons

If you are in the sponsors or TMT team, you work way too much on bad deals and you get significantly underpaid for your work. All first year analysts get the same bonus even though some teams have ~50 hour work weeks and other teams have 80-100 hour work weeks. Do not join financial sponsors, TMT, or IDI if you want to optimize for pay, worklife balance OR exit opps because you will get none of those. You will have too much work to do and work on bad deals with bad management and you will almost certainly not get compensated fairly. I am compiling what I've heard from multiple people over the years and reporting this for them because they did not want to bad mouth this firm in fear of retribution. However, I believe it's important to expose this because I am not a fan of offensively bad managing practices. From what I've heard, if you work in the harder working groups, you will give up your entire life and literally not get compensated for it with a good bonus NOR good deal experience. You will literally be wasting your time and health for management who actively does not care about the work life balance and compensation for the harder working teams. Do not join Mizuho and try to be a good hard working banker, you will not be rewarded for it at all.

Pros

If you are smart enough to print and fill out paperwork, you should coast through easily.

Cons

Where to begin? Never been a part of an organization, work or otherwise, where discontent is so widely shared. It's a given at Mizuho that everybody is just putting one foot in front of the other. Going above and beyond is neither recognized nor expected. In NYC, it's all fear-based and revolves around living in fear of the Tokyo office. A largely unimpressive workforce from top to bottom. Technology is so obsolete I'm not sure how they've survived the pandemic. The focus is on paper pushing over analysis, and by paper, I mean the company literally operates only with physical paper. Primary values include rank-and-file organization, don't speak up or speak out, women are 2nd class, never lock eyes with an old Japanese man, etc.
