      Is Moderna the next Genetech?

      Pros

      Wonderful access to Kendall Square and a great place to meet up with friends from MIT or who work for companies that are actually commercializing products for alfresco lunches. Senior management is generously compensated and tends to have a taste for the finer French things in life.

      Cons

      Moderna is not the next Genetech, but their checks don't bounce if you get my drift. Moderna is more like a poor man's Sirtris Pharmaceuticals. Their science is indeed mysterious...ie dark arts.

      Compensation and benefits are top notch, for now

      There is a total lack of transparency at this company. Senior leadership makes decisions and issues decrees from one week to the next that are all "effective immediately" with no guidance or roadmaps. Stakeholders and steering committees are ignored with decisions made by one or two people at the top....this is one of the most hierarchical companies I've ever worked at. A good chunk of the clinical operations personnel are not even up to date on ICH or other regulatory and industry guidance from 10 years ago. This place is a circus because they keep hiring clowns.

      Amazing growth, incredible tech, culture is brutal and toxic

      Pros

      You will learn a ton because you will have to everything since we are building a company. The mRNA platform is truly amazing and could change the face of medicine. Lots of investment in benefits and training. Building new corp HQ.

      Cons

      No processes or standard practices have been created so it's a lot of admin and manual work while they work to bring the company into the 21st century. CEO is a micromanager so there is a lot of busywork to give him the details he wants, which means that there is very little time to actually build the company in the right way. Basic systems just don't work, it's kind of scary. The platform is amazing - but it's like a priceless diamond in a setting of cheap tin and paperclips - the company can't support the platform in a remotely scalable way. We have a culture of crisis management and urgency - we praise the heroes who kill themselves at the last minute to fix a crisis rather than figuring out how to avoid the crisis in the first place. We talk a lot about being bold - which is great, but boldness without maturity is chaos. We're chaos.
