Pros

I worked at Modo Labs for a little over five years in two roles: the first two years as a developer on the Services / Integrations team and the rest on the engineering team. I recently left to pursue a different opportunity - just a good time for me to move on. Everyone I worked with over the years at Modo was awesome. The single best thing about working there was the people. Everyone is very passionate about what they are building together, and there is a culture of doing things right above doing things quickly, which allows that passion to thrive. Both teams I worked on felt like a family. Working time is flexible - people come in earlier or later, and work from home as needed. WFH and remote employees are accommodated very well for meetings etc. Some engineering specific comments: The teams I worked on were very conscientious about development practices, more-so than other small teams I have worked with. Emphasis on writing clean, maintainable code over getting things done quickly. Openness to improving processes and experimenting with new technologies that might benefit the team and the product. Overall low turnover for both teams. The engineering team is typically split into several smaller project teams for the day-to-day, so you're working closely with 1-3 other people and loosely with the rest of the team. Sometimes there is an informal project lead, otherwise you're reporting directly to the VP of engineering. Overall engineering was well-shielded from product/management pressure, and we typically worked directly with the Product team to flesh out short-to-medium term roadmap planning. This mitigated the tickets-thrown-over-the-fence feeling, since the team was typically part of the planning which resulted in the work to be done.

Cons

The company nearly tripled in size during the five years I was there, and as expected there were a lot of growing pains. Everything I wrote in the "Pros" section is focused on my last ~2 years. The people being awesome has always been a constant, but some things such as our team structure and good development practices are more recent. Despite the growing pains, I feel like management has always made quick efforts to address them. Individual team culture is great, but teams themselves feel siloed. I've never had a great sense of what other teams are up to, which seems like it shouldn't be the case for a small company. There is a monthly company-wide meeting which ideally would be the way to stay informed about what is going on with other teams, however: 1. It doesn't consistently happen every month 2. It doesn't have a consistent structure, or a consistent level-of-detail 3. There is a lot of patting-ourselves-on-the-back, which is not inherently bad, but kind of wastes time that could be used to provide insight into the company or what other teams are up to Benefits are decent, but not competitive: Free parking or monthly T pass compensation, 15 days PTO, typical health (option of FSA/HSA) + vision + dental + life. For me, the amount of PTO was particularly limiting.
