Pros

Working at MongoDB has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The company offers genuine remote flexibility and promotes a strong work-life balance. There’s a noticeable absence of micromanagement—you're trusted with autonomy. One of the standout aspects is the company’s commitment to data-driven decision-making. Insights and metrics guide strategy at all levels, creating a culture of clarity and accountability. Communication from management is respectful of personal time—out-of-hours contact is rare and reserved for truely urgent matters. The technology stack is modern and top-tier, and the benefits package is slightly above industry standard. What continues to impress me most is MongoDB’s ability to plan strategically while staying agile. It often feels like the company is operating 12 months ahead, yet it remains calm, mature. At the heart of MongoDB’s culture is a strong emphasis on personal and professional growth. You're encouraged—and expected—to continuously reflect, embrace transparency, and identify areas for improvement. It's a place where being data-driven isn't just a buzzword, but a mindset that pushes you to become better every day. Yes I did use AI to improve this review, God AI it waffles, who can spot the M-dash's.

Cons

One of the biggest challenges I and many others have experienced at MongoDB is the siloed nature of functions. This structure can lead to a sense of isolation and a lack of visibility into what's happening across the broader business. Improved cross-functional collaboration and communication would go a long way in building stronger alignment and community. While the benefits package is generous and does help offset some concerns, it's worth noting that base salaries are beginning to fall behind current industry benchmarks. The culture, while professional, often feels overly corporate. While I understand the need for policies that protect both the company and employees, it sometimes results in an environment where people feel they need to hold back aspects of their true selves. It’s a delicate balance. Unfortunately, I have encountered instances of age-related bias from certain employees—something that was both disappointing and surprising given the company’s otherwise progressive values. There is a clear opportunity for MongoDB to invest more in training around discrimination, bias, and inclusive behaviours to ensure a respectful and equitable workplace for all.
