Good mission, good people, failing leadership
Pros
- Great WLB - Good mission - Amazing and incredibly intelligent engineers. Every engineer I've encountered at Mozilla communicates and problem solves respectfully. The people are so pleasant to work with and there is a lot of technical mentorship to be found. - Pretty good pay for remote. Not going to compare to FAANG, but good generally. Good bonus for individual contributors because no RSUs(possible not every one will get this in the future due to financial issues). - Has remote work figured out. Every one knows how to work with distributed teams and it shows.
Cons
- The mission is used as an excuse for employees to accept bad decisions from leadership and lacking careers. If you challenge anything, there are folks in the company who will do their best to silence you for “not believing in the mission enough”. You are expected to stay and dedicate everything to the mission, but if they chose to lay you off(which could constantly happen at any moment), that is okay by them. - Leadership is a complete mess, from director level up. Executive staff is a revolving door. Promises will be made, but never kept and there will always be an excuse. Leadership seems to have no idea what they are doing and change their "priorities" every few months, accompanied by reorganizations. Layoffs are rampant. In the last year about 30% of staff was laid off. Promotions don't seem to happen very often unless you are director level or above. None of the executives took pay cuts in salary during COVID financial meltdown. - Transparency is a huge issue and leadership claims to believe in it, but it is a lie. They have full control and will not communicate down the chain in any real way. People will ask hard questions about things on moderator(during company Q and A meetings) and they will either be ignored or leadership will avoid answering the question and then move on. If you ask a question that leadership doesn't like (on a public channel meant for asking questions) during company meetings, you will be told to stop, with the implication that it will affect you in the future. - No actual plan to fix the financial situation. At first it was a "mobile first" type of priority, and then many mobile products were cancelled or "paused". Now it's Firefox first, which is a browser losing market share. Company seems to be going downhill and any one staying feels like they will just go down with the ship and take their severance when it comes. - Morale is currently very bad. People don't feel good about their career progress and they feel like the transparency from leadership is fake. They feel like their project could be cancelled and they could be laid of at any time with the constantly shifting priorities. Many individual contributors were submitted for promotions and had been promised them(some for longer than others), but almost no one received the promotions they were approved for this round and last because of financial issues. On top of that, an executive running a failing product was still randomly promoted, which is pretty upsetting. - No RSUs
