Pros

Fantastic Opportunities for learning and collaboration, lots of attempts made to facilitate work/life balance. Excellent visiting lecturer's and continuing education classes available. Unparalleled facilities and resources if you know the right people.

Cons

Completely depends on your lab chief. Low wages compared to similar intensity industry groups. Can be very insular between labs and sections.

Pros

- Noble mission - Highly intelligent colleagues - World-class scientific research - Multiple places and organizations to work at within the agency - Many workplace flexiblities and benefits (childcare, flexible schedule, employee assistance programs - Solid, stable employment

Cons

- Training/eduction budget hightly limited for personal growth and career development - Promotions relies on more favoritism and being in the right circle and of the right demographics vs. performance and talent - Lack of opportunities to ascend to higher management levels (older workers won't retire and positions not backfilled when employees depart)

Pros

NIH is a fantastic agency filled with smart, devoted people. There is a great work/life balance and a lot of support for families. Researchers are given substantial autonomy and many resources for furthering skills and expertise.

Cons

It can be challenging to move up as an intramural scientist given the pyramid system of one tenure-track investigator or chief with many staff under them. So promotion opportunities are limited.
