Pros

Access to a large number of scientists working on a diverse set of biological problems. Tons of talks on topics that are both related and unrelated to your own research. NIH is like a little city with food courts a gym and even a barber shop.

Cons

Some buildings are not as connected to the rest of the campus and may seem isolating. The pay for postbacs is not easy to live on considering the cost of living in the area.

Pros

The organization's mission is the best reason to work at NIH: the majority of scientists, clinicians, and support staff believe in what they are doing and strive to make things better.

Cons

The organization's sheer size sometimes makes it difficult to perform simple tasks. Institutes and centers do not always listen to each other and often compete for resources.
