Pros

As an Intramural Research Training Awardee right out of college, this is one of the best places to learn about research. Depending on your lab, you have the opportunity to learn about each step of the process-data collection, cleaning, analysis and writing. You also have a lot of opportunities to present your research through multiple poster sessions throughout the year.

Cons

My particular lab was extremely dramatic. Government stipends for post-bacc positions is really low.

Pros

More collegial and laidback than in academia. PI's are more relaxed and have more time to spend on high risk projects.

Cons

Salary is based on a stipend, so you have to pay quarterly taxes. Pay is lower than what you might get at university postdoc. Not many opportunities for practicing grant writing here.

Pros

Vibrant atmosphere, great infrastructure, no pressure: don't need to write grants while you are there

Cons

No that great salary, quite expensive area
