Pros

Good science is happening across NIH at all institutes. They also have very good salary and health insurance for fellows, and the salaries are far more competitive than at other academic institutes. There's also opportunity to collaborate widely across the institutes and the environment is very academic and cordial.

Cons

Not much opportunity for a career beyond a post doctoral fellowship. There are extra steps before publishing manuscripts. Most conference travel is limited to 1 per year.

Pros

Compared to extramural academia, almost unlimited resources. Very stimulating scientific environment. Constant exposure to well known researchers as they come to NIH to give talks.

Cons

Bureaucracy and paperwork, as expected in any government institution. Things get done either late or at the very last minute, but at least so far everything was done before deadlines.
