Pros

Excellent resources for research. Decent career advice office. Good reputation ... if you want to remain in academia (not worth terribly much in the private sector).

Cons

Some mentors see research fellows as nothing but easily accessible itinerant labor. Poor faculty connection to non-academic networks in some specialties means difficult transition from postdoctoral positions.

Pros

Friendly, cooperative work relationships. Saving lives, performing medical research that impacts care across the country and the world, having the time to provide outstanding care, what could be better?

Cons

Well, the patients tend to be pretty sick or to have conditions that are not easily cured (that's why they are at NIH). Sometimes new treatments don't work as well as hoped.
