Pros

Excelent training resources, adequate support from IT people, multiple ways to pursue your scientific interests and share experience with colleagues; career support ok, with specifically designed courses and workshops.

Cons

Sometimes tough competition, but a good lab chief can manage conflicts. Sometimes personal needs and situations neglected, but this is life in a big workplace.

Pros

some of the best research in the world going on. A fair amount of independence, good work/life balance, plus you don't have to worry about funding.

Cons

not much chance for advancement, salaries are mediocre, must be in DC, can't accept outside consulting etc, can be a political punching bag

Pros

Postdoctoral pay at federal installations are generally higher than most research based academic institutions. Extensive collaborations, vast array of research opportunities. Great administrative staff. Great mentors and role models.

Cons

An extensive amount of paperwork needs to be filed for doing the smallest of things and the area in the vicinity of NIH is exorbitantly expensive.
