Very challenging job

Pros

Learn how to work with different personality types, and can be nice on CV

Cons

Extremely toxic and dysfunctional working environment. I was basically treated as a glorified secretary, and received very minimal “mentorship.” Also worked 12-hour days and weekends for months at a time in order to stay afloat with the work, otherwise I’d get in trouble with my superiors.

Pros

Work life balance and opportunities for growth. You may have to leave your branch to get the growth, but there are 27 institutes of possibilities with in the NIH.

Cons

Stalled promotions. There is a lot obvious favoritism and politics going on. So, the way I moved through was by going the extra mile and other departments recruited me or I applied to other departments to get my promotion.
