Pros

Some of the benefits are still there. Free soup. Free oatmeal.

Cons

As per the previous review, the company was in better shape when Anthony Dickson was CEO. A friend in the West Trenton office told me that Mr. Dickson would stop by the Personal Lines Department in West Trenton on Saturdays. Bernie Flynn is missing in action, even on weekdays, and it shows. Fear is prevalent. AM Best recently downgraded NJM. It was not a significant downgrade, but it is a sign things are not going well. If you decide that employment at NJM is for you, keep in mind the following: You will argue with your supervisor to get time off for medical appointments. Supervisors state that they cannot trust their employees. Your supervisor will call you in as a group to discuss your personal mail you receive. Yes, NJM is very interested in solicitations for employment you receive from other insurance carriers via United States Postal Service. Your supervisor will tell you during your performance review that they want you to tell on other employees. They want you to be part of an atmosphere based on distrust. As much as upper management states that they have an open door policy...the only thing truthful about that statement is the doors to their offices are open. Decisions regarding you are made by entities known as 'they', and you will never know who 'they' are. A majority of employees do not understand the new billing system. Your supervisor will not understand the new billing system, and when you go to him or her to ask questions, he or she will ask you for help. No additional training has been provided for employees has been provided for employees despite one on one and group meetings with supervisors. This is the only job you will ever have. NJM demands your allegiance, even on your personal time off. Take too many days off and you will be questioned as to what you are doing with your personal time. There is no creativity here. Either with the pricing package for automobile or with employees. You cannot have creativity where there is fear. You cannot stay financially afloat as a company without providing alternatives for policy holders. Other insurance carriers offer more discounts than NJM, even under the new pricing system.

Pros

Preservation of a 100+ year tradition and still running strong. The free soup, highly-subsidized cafeteria is a great plus. This is no cheap soup. The work in my area is challenging and engaging. Great health benefits - nicely subsidized benefits.

Cons

The 1-year wait for the dental plan to kick in can be discouraging, especially for a bread winner. Many organizations start all their benefits either immediately or 1 month after the hire date.
