Pros

There is a large variety of different products made by national instruments which can give you the opportunity to learn about a wide array of technologies. Since the average age of the employees at the company is pretty low you can have the opportunity to get very involved in projects early in your career if you have the motivation to go after these opportunities. There are a handful of very knowledgeable technical people there who are great sources to help get you going if you can find them. The working environment is casual and for the most part the company is pretty forgiving about honest mistakes.

Cons

The management at NI is the single greatest downside of the company. The company recruits heavily for a position known as AE (application engineering) which puts people in a program known as ELP (engineering leadership program). These people are basically expected to do the technical support for 1-3 years and then have to move on to another area of the company. A lot of times this ends up being Sales or Marketing but you also get a fair amount working in R&D. Most of the R&D management came through this path at some point and while they are not bad people they really don't have the technical or managerial experience to be in this kind of management role. This leads to a lot of frustration for the technical folks. Overall it seems like the company never figured out how to deal with the fact it had grown so much so fast and now is just floundering around trying to make the old formula fit the current situation.

Pros

Great place to start a career, especially for new grads. NI is big on ownership and responsibility. They like to give "meaty" features to new folks and see how far they get on their own. These projects receive support and oversight from leaders who tend to provide excellent mentorship opportunities to newer folks (your mileage may vary by department & manager). All facets of the organization (SW R&D, HW R&D, Marketing, Sales, ...) have some level of formal training to convert college graduates into productive members of the organization.

Cons

Most engineers work 45-50 hours per week, but some work 60-80 per week to "catch up" and never do. Many parts of R&D have temporarily (a quarter or 2) instituted 6-7 day weeks to meet project deadlines (rather than cut features). At NI-Tech (R&D's Internal Expo), they call up folks who have worked many nights & weekends, tell everyone else in R&D how hard they have worked, give them a plaque, give them a couple hundred dollar bonus, and say, "That is Engineering Excellence". I feel sorry for their family, children, and friends. This is a part of the culture I don't care for. Plus there are plenty of folks who put in nights and weekends who don't get recognized, likely because they have poor managers. Most of the management is young and inexperienced. Once you are experienced, you need to either buddy up with Senior Management, or get out. When you want to transfer groups, lets hope that your manager and the target group's manager like each other, otherwise it either may not happen or will take much longer than you think it should. Lots of power struggles among upper management. Many experienced folks leave to pursue other opportunities, such as better compensation. New products & features are celebrated and given plenty of resources. Quality and testing is talked about often but tends to get the short straw. Innovation seems to get the same treatment (more buzz than substance). There is plenty of buzz, smoke, and mirrors at NI (ask AEs about the Kool-Aid).

Pros

- Great engineering culture. Awesome place to start. NI is a place that takes engineering seriously. It's a large company with a lot of technology and all kinds of engineering roles. - Doesn't have an extreme work culture with unsustainable overtime. - No "bro" culture. - Kind people. - Decent sick and vacation allotment.

Cons

- NI once used to be a place with low salaries, but great benefits and rock-solid job stability. Now after multiple CEOs and a merger by another giant company, it's now a place with low salaries, ok benefits (lousy health insurance), and poor job security (multiple layoffs + outsourcing) - RTO
