Built around heroes

Pros

National Instruments is a fairly laid back atmosphere. They lost their Great Places to Work standing a few years ago and they've been working hard to get it back. They're trying to maintain/recreate somewhat of a startup atmosphere in a large company. Not an easy thing to do. The benefits are pretty good, and everybody is pretty easy to work with.

Cons

National Instruments mostly relies on heroes to get the work done. There is not a lot of process, and even less design and documentation. They hire the best and the brightest (new graduates 99% of the time) because they rely on bright individuals rather than teams and process to keep moving forward.

Great Company to start your career

Pros

It's a great place to start your career if you are just out of school. You work with some of the brightest people from all over the world on projects.

Cons

The pay is very average. The company tries to sell you on their laid back start up culture as a consolation prize. People still need to make a good wage to be motivated.
