Pros

Management very seasoned and has high integrity; management communicates very openly with employees; NI has an outstanding and affordable health benefits plan; people who perform well are rewarded well in recognition, bonuses, and compensation. Talented and hardworking engineers have many career paths to follow. NI is diversified in customers and industries and is managed conservatively; these two things make NI able to weather a tough global economic environment.

Cons

as a high tech company, very high demands on most employees to output work product. In order to be perceived as performing well, one must sacrifice the work-life balance scale in favor of work. Managers/officers do not always seem to truly understand personal sacrifices employees make to be rated as above average or exceeds expectations. However, this is not unique to NI or even to the high tech industry.

Pros

As an intern, I got to work on a technically challenging project that was crucial to the success of a real product, which doesn't always happen at all internships. My group manager and "mentor" (a more senior engineer that helped me with my project) were both very accommodating people, and I never felt awkward about asking them for help or direction. I think the culture is very, very laid back and open, which is a big plus for creating an environment that people would enjoy working in.

Cons

The pay seems to be a bit lower than other computer engineering companies. As an intern, the pay was more than enough for someone still in college, but it seems that full-time salaries are a bit lower than other top companies. I didn't really have too many bad experiences there, but it does seem that there is a lot of HR propaganda that NI is the best place to work in the world and that people are using their products to make the world a better place and all other types of idealistic jargon. However, if that's the worst thing I can say about a company, I guess that's not a bad thing.

Pros

National Instruments is a fun, relaxed workplace. People frequently come in wearing shorts and flipflops and it's easy to make your schedule flexible. Management is normally pretty open to feedback, and it's definitely possible to move around (laterally) within the company to try different things. It's easy to get some fantastic, resume building experience in a short period of time.

Cons

With such a flat organization, it can be difficult to make significant career advances. Salaries also don't increase quite as fast as some competitors. NI is looking for people who are passionate about its culture and products - and those people typically work for less.
