Pros

Perks: - Amount of days off just starting (22 starting) - Numerous Holidays off (Black Friday included) - Flexible work schedules - Work culture

Cons

- work is monotonous and boring (day to day life is a struggle) - poor compensation (makes you question your self worth) - Stressful end of year (management makes you work like a dog) - the day after Xmas is not off (unfair for those whose families are out of state that can't travel back the next day) - vibes of favoritism (need to be a teachers pet to move up) - distracting work environments - can't take time off in December (only emergencies) - numbers driven mentality (your worth depends on how much you push out or what number you hit. Shouldn't have your work ethic be judged on a number)

National Life Group Response

Thanks for sharing your experience. As a learning organization, we're constantly working to better serve customers—and each other. Year end is a stressful time across the industry and we appreciate your help in making it a great year. Hopefully having December 24th as a bonus paid day off this year will help you connect with family and recharge. And please take advantage of the many personal and professional development programs and classes open to all teammates listed on the Learning Loop page of National Life Today. Most importantly, reach out to your manager or anyone in the People Center with thoughts about making your career fulfilling and productive. Thank you.

Pros

Nice views from cafe; willing to pay for additional education (just don't expect it to get you anywhere in the company)

Cons

Anything this company tells you about employee development is a complete joke. Employee development plans are a pointless HR exercise to make HR and Sr. Mgt feel better about themselves. Company is willing to pay for employees to get additional eduction but could care less once you have it and is more than willing to let you move on to a different company. Ask around Vermont and find out how many other companies have NL to thank for paying for their employees' college or advanced degrees or industry designations. Pay is below market for most employees but the company will go out of their way to overpay for Sr. Mgt from outside companies who don't even live in Vermont. Even the CEO doesn't live in Vermont. Nor does the President's of ESI or Sentinel. The only way to actually make money at NL is to leave and then come back in as an outsider. Otherwise you should be happy with your 1.5% raise every year and keep your mouth shut. I will give them credit, they do seem to be trying to improve in certain areas. But it's hard to have faith in this Company now or anytime in the near future unless drastic changes take place.
