      Beautiful places to work

      Pros

      I worked as a seasonal Interpretive Park Ranger. This position provided me with opportunities to explore beautiful places and gain excellent costumer service skills. Became a well rounded employee who was able to manage many tasks from leading a hike on the fly, to presenting school programs on a train excursion through the park, to managing the daily operations at visitor centers. Worked with some amazing people.

      Cons

      Very limited full-time opportunities. Most positions with NPS are seasonal. Also, you will need to be willing to move around, which was fine when I was younger. Now as I am beginning to find the place where I want to be, moving out of the state is not an option.

      Pros

      Work in places that are rich in history and/or environment. Visitors interested. Very satisfying to work with the visitors. Most visitors appreciate of attention they receive from Park Rangers.

      Cons

      Hours, low pay and poor management. Park Rangers in interpretation who do tours and educational programs are the front line for the park service. Over 50% are seasonal with no benefits. There is little appreciation for the loyalty and dedication of these employees from management.
