The opportunity to work at some of the most amazing cultural and natural resources the United States has to offer. More importantly, it is the work to preserve them for the future AND the opportunity to link our visitors emotions and intellect to the resource that makes it all worthwhile.

Cons

After 25 years of Federal service, the methods by which we conduct business, especially along the lines of personnel, hiring, and procurement, are soul crushing. Agency regs and Federal law prevent a sane and productive methodology to processes of work.

Mission. People. Once you become part of the family, you can never get out... even if you try. Who doesn't like the National Parks?

Cons

If you are a thought leader, expect resistance from the entrenched old timers. The culture of the organization resists change, and that is likely for good reason being that they employ people in the business of preservation...

Great work locations, good coworkers, close-nit. Pay is decent for most areas as long as you can get park housing. All in all, it's an outstanding job and I would encourage anyone to consider working a summer or two.

Cons

Mission 66 Housing, advancing in the GS ranks isn't easy.
