Too Political

Pros

It's outdoors and iconic, with one of the largest collections of historical structures in the nation. It's vast size spans across 3 counties and covers over 80,000 acres.

Cons

Too much red tape and egotistical individuals. There is also too much politics involved here with favoritism through the 'old boy network. The management does not reflect the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area community. There are too many questionable ethics violations that occur here, that it is a surprise they have not been caught yet.

Poor management and morale

Pros

Getting to work in beautiful places, historic places. Working with co-workers who are dedicated to the mission. Serving visitors who love Park Rangers and love the national parks.

Cons

The Peter Principle is alive and well in the National Park Service -- most of upper management is very incompetent, totally out of touch with the field staff, and shows little care, concern or support for the field and seasonal staff. Most of my colleagues in most parks seems to feel there is a huge morale problem. Also, many of the jobs are seasonal, and seasonal staff is not recognized for their commitment or contributions like permanent staff is.
