Pros

Nationwide used to have a great name in the insurance industry -- sadly, that is no longer the case. I am a retired Nationwide employee with 40+ years of service, and I cannot honestly say at the present time there are any good reasons to work for this company. When I was first hired by Nationwide, the company was great and I was very proud to work for them. The pay at that time was adequate and the benefits affordable. Management at that time appreciated and applauded the effort of the employees; and pay increases, although in small increments, helped to offset inflation.

Cons

Employees not treated fairly and equally. Very poor management. The MBOs are never given out to the employees in the first month, or even two months, of the new year. Most likely, they are received in May or June of the year in which they are to be accomplished. Then, they were changed two or three times after that. Senior claims management are too scared of losing their jobs to stand up for their subordinates. Honestly, this company just simply does not have any direction at this time and are "flying by the seat of their pants." Very sad, but true.

Pros

Coworkers are helpful, and if it wasn't for them I would not know what I was doing when I first started my job as I did not receive much training. Also, the claims managers in my office have been helpful, and understand our concerns and problems with this job. They will try to fight for our side to management above them.

Cons

The salary is poor in comparison to a lot of other employers of insurance claims representatives. No work life balance with this company. Nationwide wants top noch customer service, but is not willing to hire the needed staff to meet the work load and demands from the customers. This is not a place for working mothers.

Pros

they are a financially sound company that should be around for many years to come the upcoming merger of Nationwide Mutual and NFS should help remove some of the short-term focus that has dogged NF of late Columbus, Ohio is a great place to live and raise a family

Cons

their compensation policy is to target midpoint pay levels based upon lagged market studies, so they are always behind in market pay pay is becoming more performance based - unfortunately, this means that you can work really hard and end up with a cut in pay if the stock market heads south or if the wind blows the wrong way
