Pros

Paid sick leave, the end.

Cons

Where do I start? There's so many things wrong with this organization it's not even funny. If you want the high blood pressure then this is the place for you. From what I've observed management can't control gossiping or rumors which creates an extremely toxic environment. If you're coming in and you're hearing gossips then this should be a huge red flag. They have a large fund provided by the tax payers and will burn through it because they can, so they hold no value for some of their employees as from what I've also seen the turnover rate is pretty high and they wont care about retainment. I'd leave this company but they tied me down to a contract worth thousands of dollars due to school, had I had the opportunity to work for a couple of months before starting school then I would have submitted my resignation letter and not wasted my time on this company. My only hope now is to fail in obtaining my secret clearance so I could be let go without these two-face people stealing money from me. I've never seen such a toxic environment in my life, I've heard leaders conspiring to screw over their long time employees and getting rid of them over simple things. Most hold no respect for their employees' privacy and will openly discuss their issues in front of, or share their information with others which is highly demoralizing. The sailors are more professional and hold a higher standard than their civilian counterparts.

Pros

Interesting products and challenging work. Depending on the Division, my work was very enjoyable, and I actually used my engineering knowledge. If you find the right place for you, it can be a great career. Free clearance included. Fantastic work-life balance because you can't take anything home. Hourly pay and overtime for every position, if available.

Cons

That being said, there are so many employees in most Divisions that are coasting to a cushy retirement. The pension and benefits attract people who work for 3 years to become permanent, and then look at the ocean after that until age 62. Pay is not very competitive, around 20% below average, and that increases as engineers gain experience. Hiring process makes promises that they can't keep. No benefit for work above and beyond, or recognition/reward for exemplary employees, other than advancement opportunities down the road. The rules and regulations, red tape can bog down pay, leave, work process, delivery, safety etc. Veteran preference can push aside qualified candidates for positions. Long onboarding process, 6+ months.

Pros

Stable, lots of vacation time, low stress. Think of it like that philosophy class you once took in college because you wanted an easy A. Retirement and other benefits are aluable if you're willing to stay in for the long haul.

Cons

Government work is a world all it's own. Working on a military base is reminiscent of a high-school. For me this is a big time con, other love it. Tenure leads to working with a lot of emotionally immature and technically incompetent people. No impetus to improve or solve hard problems. Innovation is stifled by layers of bureaucracy. Pay is based on time-served, not value added.
