Pros

Lots of knowledgeable and helpful coworkers. Get to do important work that has a direct impact on fleet readiness. Pretty good work-life balance if that sort of thing is important to you. If it wasn't for the GS pay scale, i could see myself building a lifelong career here.

Cons

The GS pay scale is a bad joke. Not all Navsea centers use it, but Port Hueneme does. It's not easy working hard in school to become an engineer, and then still be barely getting by paycheck to paycheck while all my other engineering friends, who graduated with me, have jobs where they get to live very comfortably. People often tell you that the benefits make up for the pathetic pay, but i'm a little suspect of that claim.

Decent pay, lots of red tape

Pros

Decent pay and leave time. Some opportunities but you have to nab them ASAP.

Cons

Window for promotion is available but slim. You have to figure out what the mold is in order to fit in--no one tells you anything. Because you have to figure out lots of things, you can be taken advantage of. Use the regulations & policies to your advantage.
