Pros

On the job experience. Extensive training. Vacation time. Good long term job.

Cons

The government. It’s like high school for adults.

Pros

They have really great retirement programs. There is a ton of job security when times are hard. You get to travel around for work and see other countries.

Cons

They are constantly undermanned and 500+ hours of overtime is expected every year, including periods of 12 hour shifts (days and graves) and both Saturday and Sunday overtime. There is no work life balance. To them you are just another number and they do not care if they burn you out. The facilities are falling apart, my office has no running water and the nearest bathroom is a 0.7 mile walk one way. The only parking they offer employees has a 13+ year waitlist to get a parking pass so you end up having to pay between $8 and $20 a day for street parking. Because of this my walk into work is 25 minutes after I park my car, and that is with hopping on a public bus to shorten the distance.

Pros

Won't get fired after two years of federal work unless you are really messing things up like saying inappropriate things or late to meetings or some really obvious stuff. If you are completely incompetent at your job you will probably just get moved somewhere else for another place to deal with you. It's daycare really, a bunch of old guys doing nothing but reminiscing about the good old days and a bunch of young folks either A. trying to not do a lick of work and feel extremely entitled at the same time and B. people who are trying to work and do a good job that just spin wheels due to bureaucracy. Believe it or not, this is a pro for some.

Cons

Hard to get ahead unless you are charismatic and just pretty much buddy buddy with your higher ups. Technical expertise means very little and improving anything doesn't really matter in the long run. Tax payers money needs to be spent, the how and what for doesn't really matter.
