Pros

Good salary, very secure job

Cons

People are stuck in their ways, loads of layers you need to break through to make the smallest changes. Safety comes second to performance.

Pros

Lots of internal opportunities for progression 12 hour shift pattern has great work/life balance You are left alone to get on with your job

Cons

8 hour shift pattern gives poor work/life balance (7 on, 2 off, 7 on, 4 off) Pressured to do overtime and made to feel guilty when you already have plans. I was phoned by my boss after I advised Rosters of personal plans and my boss tried to get me to change my personal appointments so I could work! Be prepared that you wont be considered for promotion if you regularly turn down overtime. Bosses approach staff they want in a role before application deadline. So if you're not 'the chosen one' the whole interview process is a waste of time but done for transparency. Seen it dozens of times. Local Operation Managers are usually ex Signallers who have not managed people before and are promoted and let loose. They are not being shadowed and some have questionable management styles!
