Pros

I work with so many great people who are focused on improving what we do as an organisation. There is a friendly, supportive and welcoming team environment with lots of opportunity for training and progression - whether that is to move upwards or to move into different areas of the business. My experience is that the company gets the balance right between providing support and giving autonomy, you are your given responsibility for your area which I really love. A key selling point for me is the work life balance and Network Rail do a lot to help facilitate this, with a real focus on health and well being. For example, here at Milton Keynes we have an on site gym, a variety of sports &social clubs and a huge number of ongoing sports, charity and other social events. This is a huge organisation and you are constantly learning. I joined 2 years ago and at the time I had very little idea about what Network Rail did as a business. Working across different projects, getting out on track and just taking opportunities that have been offered have really helped me understand how complex and important our business is to the UK.

Cons

We've often focused more on process and not so much on outcomes. I'm glad to say there is a huge cultural shift towards continuous improvement and lean systems. Conversations are now focusing around results rather than processes and this is really positive for us as a company.

Pros

Clearly trying to care about and motivate staff through focus on things like safety and suicide prevention. Offices usually conveniently located.

Cons

Company is too big and too inflexible to change. Very difficult to make an inroads as an outsider to the industry. Induction process is more about how you will become like the institution than what value you can add. Too many unecessary internal meetings.
