Great place to do work

Pros

BEAUTIFUL office space, excellent work-life balance (in my experience, nearly everyone is gone by 5:30 at the latest), opportunity to advance, fast growth (many new faces). This isn't the kind of company with free lunch and dinner everyday and ping pong tables in the office. It's a place you go to do work that you hopefully enjoy (although we do have company lunch once a month and a themed company-wide happy hour each month as well). There are channels to bring your own personality into the company as well (art night? rock climbing? let's set it up!). Women are well represented on all levels (rare for a tech company). And last but not least, Lew Cirne and Chris Cook are some of the friendliest, hard working, and dedicated people I've ever come across.

Cons

New Relic is going through some growing pains right now-- no longer a "fun" young startup, but moving towards a more mature company (more policies, middle management, etc.). Lots of meetings for management, sometimes difficult to get time with. Remote employees may feel disconnected from the main offices.

Want to Love New Relic more than I actually do (unmet potential)

Pros

Great product that really helps devs make better products Very accessible opportunities for devs to travel to submit papers to conferences and have trip paid to speak Lovely locations with access to transit including terrific bike parking on-floor in Portland Polyglot development environment with every language getting full respect Great practices like having lunch together and creative common areas where corner offices would normally be are genuinely innovative efforts at egalitarianism and are used and appreciated.

Cons

Priorities changing day to day for some development teams result in a lot of thrash. Often poor product quality and much technical debit especially on the back-end and main web front-end. (earnest efforts to make this better but systemic issues are difficult to change) Proliferating layers of middle management in Engineering with questionable interpersonal skills increasingly slowing development velocity and creating friction to getting things done.

Pros

- Lots of nice, smart, respectful and collaborative coworkers - Autonomy and interesting work (lots of opportunity to learn and grow) - Awesome exec team from Wily that truly cares about employees - Really beautiful offices - Fantastic benefits - including paid new parent leave, really cool perks/discounts and a 401k match! (at a pre-IPO company!) - Work/life balance - awesome flexibility and support for parents (this is huge for lots of employees - including me personally) - Community service - supports and provides employees time to volunteer - core to the culture!

Cons

- They don’t pay for cell phones - With the fast growth sometimes the workload can be tough (as we hire, this should get better)

Thank you for your kind comments! It is indeed difficult to nurture the culture during growth like we have experienced -- and your note makes it clear why doing so is essential. The question of communications/Q&A is a good one. While we won't move to weekly (!) all-hands, having them more regularly -- and having other venues for Q&A -- is definitely in the plan.
